Blisters are among the worst things that can happen to a hiker. If you’ve ever had one, you know about the excruciating pain they cause. Those nasty buggers can break your stride, and even make you reconsider pursuing your trek.
“Some of us are more blister-prone than others and require blister prevention care before every hike,” says The Outbound’s Kristen Fuller. According to her, trekkers’ attention should be on preventing friction from their boots and socks, and on keeping their feet cool and dry.
As an outdoors enthusiast herself, Fuller has had her fair share of blisters over the years, as well as the opportunity to confer with experts in this area. In a recent article, she shares invaluable tips on how to avoid getting blisters in the first place, and on how to treat our feet if this nightmare occurs.
Blister Prevention
- Select the appropriate boot size by getting your feet fitted by an expert.
- Use sock liners under your wool socks.
- Use supportive insoles to limit friction.
- Lubricate your feet before putting on your socks.
- Protect your common blister areas.
Blister Treatment
- Pop or don’t pop? Experts say pop.
- Dress your popped blister.
