There’s no wrong way to set a goal that you want to achieve, right? Wrong, actually. It’s not as simple as picking out something from midair and deciding to accomplish it. If you’re looking for the best way to set goals, take a look at the core of this process: the planning stage.

Most of the work goes into the planning stage

As noted in Lifehack’s “How to Write SMART Goals (With SMART Goals Templates)”, you’ll find that the majority of the work that goes into achieving your goals comes from the actual planning process. Your goals should be drawn up so that they’re achievable above all else. Start by using the acronym “SMART”:

  • Specific: Your goal should be focused and not too vague.
  • Measurable: Is there a way to evaluate your goal’s accomplishment? If not, create one!
  • Attainable: Make sure your goal is actually possible to achieve.
  • Relevant: Your goal should be important for your life in general.
  • Time-bound: Set a deadline for your goal to be achieved.
